Self-esteem, self-efficacy and work identity

For many people, the professional role is not only a job. It also works as an internal regulator: it gives structure, recognition, a sense of competence and a way of knowing who you are. When that role shifts, self-esteem can feel shaken too.

Work can regulate more than it seems

Performance, role and recognition can become ways to hold inner value, safety and direction.

Self-esteem, self-efficacy and work identity

When work becomes central to identity

It is normal for work to be part of identity. Difficulty appears when the professional role becomes the main source of personal value, safety and control. Then criticism, a career change, a pause or uncertainty can feel like an internal threat.

Self-esteem and self-efficacy are not the same

Self-esteem is connected to the perception of personal worth. Self-efficacy is the sense that you can act, learn, solve and face situations. When work is going well, both can feel strong. When something changes, a painful question may appear: “Who am I if I am no longer effective in this role?”.

The work role as an internal regulator

For some people, working, producing, solving or being needed calms anxiety. It gives order, direction and a sense of control. But if regulation depends too much on performance, rest can feel like guilt, mistakes can feel like shame and uncertainty can feel like loss of identity.

What happens when the role changes

A career change, burnout, migration, parenthood or new technologies can shift this internal structure. A person may feel less capable, less valuable or disconnected from themselves, even when real resources are still there.

How therapy can help

Therapy can help separate personal worth from performance, rebuild self-efficacy in a more flexible way and find forms of regulation that do not depend only on work. It can also help you understand inner pressure, fear of failure and the need to prove yourself.
